I have the Kaplan OAT 2019-2020 study book and I'm wondering if the information in there is comprehensive and a good indicator of the material being tested. Because in the qualitative reasoning section there's not much math but I'm pretty sure there would be more material tested than what's in the book. If it's not comprehensive enough, what other study material is there that's inexpensive/free? Also, where can I get lots of practice tests? Thank you!

 - Bear1219

Dear Bear1219,

We have used Kaplan Strategies preparatory books, OAT destroyer, Exam cracker, practice tests online, watched YouTube videos, review sheets, and class notes. Some of us have enrolled into Kaplan preparatory courses. Chad and Organic Chemistry are great Youtube accounts that review the information well. We would suggest to review Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and physics problems if you have a large studying time. If you don’t have much time to study, then do your best by reviewing concepts you have not master that well. Flashcards are essential. They are extremely helpful, and you can make them in quizlet or use ones that have been published already. However, be aware of misinformation from some. The Kaplan study bundle is a great study source, where they give you question banks and 2 practice tests more. Also, the Kaplan tests are a bit harder than the actual so don’t worry too much if you are scoring badly, if within the 300 range in the Kaplan then you will do well in the actual.

Wishing you the best of luck,

Dear U See Eyes,

what are some easy/fun GE's that you guys recommend? also is there a way where we can set up a zoom meeting with a board member who is the same major as us so we can get some help planning out our 4 year schedule for optometry school?

- Cinnamon Princess

Dear Cinnamon Princess,

Some of our favorite GE courses are Art 9A, Education 124, PSCI 11A, Public Health 1, Public Health 2, Sociology 2, Psych 56L, Arts 1, Anthro 2A, Anthro 41A (highly recommended with Professor Douglas), Sociology 1, Gen&Sex 50A, and LSCI 2. There are more, and you can find them in the member exclusive page course advice. A brief preview of how we rate these courses involve their work load, difficulty level, and GPA impact. Therefore, if you are a paid member make sure to visit the page or join us membership program :). We are also free to Zoom call. Just message or email the board member you are interested in meeting with and we definitely schedule something.
As for the 4 year plan, we are actually planning to have a 4 year plan workshop this quarter where we’ll briefly go over some of the main pre-requisites for optometry school and give some advice about things to keep in mind while making your own 4 year plan. We will also provide a template where you can use to making your own plan. Nonetheless, as always, if you ever want to reach out to any of us for help or advice outside of our weekly meetings, feel free to message us! We are more than happy to help.

You're SPEC-tacular,
