I hope your winter break went well, and that everyone is coming back well rested! Dr. Derek Tong from Center for Vision Development Inc. reached out to our club with the opportunity to work at his clinic in Pasadena.
The office specializes in pediatrics and has provided experience to over 50 pre-optometry students in the past 20 years, 6 of whom are currently attending SCCO at MBKU. At this office, as stated in Dr. Tong’s email, students would have the opportunity to gain experience with the following tasks:
“1. Perform health questions and temperature screening of patients upon arrival.
2. Check in patients into our EHR system.
3. Administer eye therapy procedures such as eye tracking chart, binocular vision training instructions, eye-hand coordination training computer program.
4. Administer preliminary examination procedures such as visual acuity, color vision screening, stereopsis screening, eye-hand dominance screening, and King-Devick Test for Reading.
5. Perform supplemental procedures such as administering eyedrops for eye-dilation.
6. Perform procedures such as Visual Field screening test or Computerized Eye Movement Recordings.
7. Schedule new and returning patient appointments.
8. Communicate with patients by phone, email, and text messages.”
Amongst other titles, Dr. Tong is a fellow under multiple organizations–including the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association–a diplomate of Binocular Vision and Perception & Pediatric Optometry, and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at both SCCO and Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry. Center for Vision Development Inc. is looking for someone to fill the role of an Optometric Vision Therapy Assistant on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Undergraduate pre-optometry students who are available at this time as well as pre-optometry students in their gap years are welcome to apply. Although the office is a bit further from Irvine, the distance could still be manageable for those who have availability on Saturdays. This is an amazing opportunity, especially for students who are interested in learning more about vision rehabilitation and working with children’s eyecare.
If you are interested in applying for this position, please email Dr. Derek Tong at [email protected] as soon as possible!
As always, PLEASE let us know if you get the position so we can thank Dr. Tong!
