Summer Volunteer/Shadowing/Job Credits Opportunities -

6/6/2024

Hello Members!

I hope you are having a wonderful week 10! I hope you all feel prepared for finals! Here are some volunteering/shadowing/job opportunities for summer.

VOLUNTEERING:
UCI Eye Mobile for Children - Orange County

Jennifer Espinoza, Eye Mobile Coordinator, is looking for pre-optometry students to volunteer with the eye mobile to give free vision screenings, eye exams, and glasses to underserved children across Orange County.
I volunteered for 2 great quarters and definitely recommend volunteering, too! You can choose to volunteer on the eye mobile that goes to schools around Orange County, at their office at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, or both. You decide how many hours you would like to volunteer (at least once a week) and 10 hours a week is recommended to ask for a letter of recommendation. You can ask to start volunteering in Summer or Fall.

Jennifer will ask for your schedule later on and she is very flexible and understanding. Jennifer and Diana are wonderful to work with and helping the kids is so rewarding. You will be able to experience helping kids through optometry which is a unique opportunity to learn if you would like to be a pediatric optometrist and show optometry schools your dedication to becoming a well-rounded applicant.

If you are interested in volunteering, please email your
- unofficial transcript (at least 2.5 GPA)
- negative TB shot results
to Jennifer Espinoza at [email protected]

SHADOWING (kind of):
Southern California School of Optometry presents the Specialty Spotlight Series! They provide a series of hour-long videos exploring 7 specialties: Cornea Contact Lens, Comanaging with Ophthalmology, Primary Care and Ocular Disease, Low Vision Rehabilitation, Pediatrics, and Vision Therapy.

Maeve, a student at SCCO, hosts the series where she presents what the specialty is, lets an SCCO faculty member in the specialty present about their career, and then holds an information interview with the faculty to answer all of our questions. The videos are a really helpful introduction to the specialties and are like shadowing 7 different specialties from home but still being able to hear about the optometrists' journeys, a day in their lives, how they feel about their specialty, and advice for students. This might count as shadowing, but either way, this is a very helpful resource for learning what you would like to do in optometry, making you knowledgeable of the field as a whole, and is something SCCO would love to see in your application/interview.

If you are interested in watching the videos, the link is https://www.ketchum.edu/optometry/sccovideo and the Spotlight Series is in the Live Event Recordings.

CREDITS FOR WORKING:
If you have a job, you can earn 2-4 units per quarter! This is a great way to complete units or reach full-time status without having to enroll in more classes. Students from all majors can receive credit for internship sites (including the optometry office you work at). There are only a few self-reflection assignments about your experience. This opportunity is from Nick Tang!

In order to qualify an internship to count toward Uni Studies 193, it should meet the following criteria:
1. You must secure the internship first and complete other steps before you can enroll in the course.
2. The internship must qualify and be registered on UCI Handshake (https://career.uci.edu/handshake/).
3. If it is not registered on UCI Handshake, then please have the employer complete the Internship Description Template (When you reach out, they will send they form)

If you are interested, please email [email protected] to determine if your job qualifies for Uni Stu 193 Internship (2-4 Units). If you have any other questions, please text Nick at (909)647-6999.

GOOD LUCK ON FINALS! I am so proud of everyone for getting out of their comfort zones and applying for these opportunities! It makes me so happy every time I hear you get a position! You all deserve success and are worthy of amazing job/volunteering/shadowing experiences. Please keep taking advantage of these opportunities because you are exactly what these offices/organizations want. Thank you for a wonderful year as Outreach Chair! :)

Best,
Emma Le (U See Eyes Outreach Chair '23-'24)

Good afternoon Members!

I hope you are getting excited for summer! We have an exciting opportunity for a research job at Dr. Kern's Diabetic Retinopathy Research Lab with UCI Ophthalmology. They are looking for U See Eyes members to fill a part-time/paid student worker position ($16/hour) starting in the summer.

The lab investigates diabetic retinopathy which is how long-term diabetes can lead to abnormal blood vessel growth and damage in the eye. They focus on the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy/complications and novel approaches to inhibit diabetes-related vision complications. The position involves supporting the research team, assisting long-term mice work in Bio Sci III, daily monitoring the overall health of mice, taking weekly body weight measurements, and injecting insulin under supervision. (Students may need to be available over holidays and vacations to take care of animals as needed.)

This is a very interesting vision-related extracurricular that could make you stand out! Some optometry schools, like Berkeley and RMU that have visited our club, value research experience. Being students at UCI, we are given the unique ability to participate in research while students at other schools are not. Working in a research lab is a great experience that you should take advantage of.

If you are interested, please apply through their job post on Handshake at https://uci.joinhandshake.com/stu/jobs/8970936. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 31st.

As always, PLEASE let me know if you get the position so I can thank Arya Weinstock (HR Analyst) for sharing with us!

Hello Members!

I hope you're having a wonderful week 6! We have an exciting job opportunity from Andre at Alicia Valencia Eyecare Center in Laguna Hills. Here is Andre's email:

My name is Andre and I currently work for an amazing optometrist as an optometric technician. I will sadly be leaving the office in a few months and was looking for someone to replace me. There are no strict requirements for the job. We are more than happy to train the right candidate. We are mainly looking for people who have an interest in optometry. The office is called Alicia Valencia Eyecare Center and the job would be an optometric technician with front staff duties as well. Daily duties include pre-testing, pulling insurance, answering the phone, and selling and dispensing glasses.

The optometrist is extremely kind, understanding, and flexible. Perfect for a student! Plus there are lots of opportunities to learn the ins and outs of optometry and more specifically private practice. I have had a wonderful experience working as a technician here. I have learned a lot about the field and got first-hand experience seeing how a private practice runs. The optometrist is also one of the kindest people I know! She is very approachable during work. Unlike other doctors I've worked for in the past, she does not hide in her office, she really enjoys spending her time with the staff and getting to know people. All the patients love her! The office is small but fast-paced at times. Everyone of all experience levels can learn here. The best way to apply would be to email their resume to this email I am using to communicate with you. I will screen the resumes, and then pass them along to the doctor to make the decision. Please let me know if there is anything else you'd like to know :)

If you are interested in the position, please email your resume to Andre Aloian at [email protected].

As always, PLEASE let me know if you get the job position so I can thank Andre!

 Hello Members!

Good luck on midterms! We have an exciting internship opportunity from Dr. Wendy Tran from Blink Optometry, Laguna Hills. The internship applications open today, May 1st!

Internship programs will provide pre-optometry students with hands-on experience in an optometry practice. You will be working more closely with the optometrists to be actively taught more about the field. Internship programs are a great way to learn about optometry, get a letter of recommendation, and get trained to be hired.

Dr. Wendy Tran was our first speaker this year in Fall 2023. She has spoken to our club multiple times and always gives us an enthusiastic, insightful, and genuine presentation about why she loves optometry. She was a U See Eyes member before attending the UC Berkeley School of Optometry. She now owns a private practice in Laguna Hills where she does primary eye care, myopia control, ocular disease, specialty contacts, and co-management for LASIK, glaucoma, and cataract patients from ophthalmologists. Dr. Nguyen is another doctor at her practice. She is a Western graduate. You will learn a lot about optometry through their internship program and become just as passionate as Dr. Tran!

If you are interested, please email an introduction and resume to Jennifer (Internship Program Coordinator) at [email protected]

As always, PLEASE let me know if you get the position so I can thank Dr. Tran.

Job/Shadowing/Volunteering Opportunity: Attentive Eye Care Optometry - Buena Park

4/28/2024

Hello Members!

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend! I have an exciting opportunity from my place of work! Doctor Khanh Tran of Attentive Eye Care Optometry is looking for students to work as part-time or full-time opticians. All applicants will be trained. Anyone can reach out to shadow or volunteer as well!

Dr. Tran is an alumni of UCI (class of 2000) and SCCO (class of 2005) and is also a professor at both SCCO and Western. He has also spoken for the club in the past and is willing to help those interested in the job during the application process as well! You will get to meet other optometrists and faculty members of optometry schools as they often come in for patients within their field of expertise. For example, Dr. Do comes in once a week for pediatric and geriatric patients and Dr. Han comes once a month for pediatric day when she is off from teaching at SCCO.

My personal experience working with Dr. Tran has been amazing. The hiring process was easy, no scary interview. He is very kind and understanding. He loves to talk and joke with us. His eye exams are very thorough and patients always leave happy with our services. He emphasizes putting school and our career goals first by being very flexible with scheduling and sharing his passion for optometry by answering all our questions and showing us case studies. All of my coworkers attended UCI and a few are part of our club! Unfortunately, I have to move back to the San Fernando Valley and my coworker got into optometry school (thanks to Dr. Tran’s letter of rec!), so he is looking to hire more pre-optometry students.

If you are interested in the job/shadowing/volunteering opportunity, please contact Dr. Tran by calling or texting him directly at (714)737-8887.

Shadowing Opportunities: Southern California School of Optometry

4/20/2024

Hello Members!

I hope you're having a wonderful Saturday! We just had our SoCal Eye Conference where we heard from Optometry School admissions reps, Optometry Students, and Practicing Optometrists. One of the points stressed by all groups was the importance of getting involved and knowing that you want to become an optometrist. An essential way to do this is by shadowing!

The Southern California School of Optometry (SCCO) has 2 programs to help pre-optometry students shadow: the SCCO Alumni Shadowing Program and Shadowing SCCO Optometric Interns at Ketchum Health Anaheim.

The SCCO Alumni Shadowing Program connects you to SCCO Alumni who have volunteered to host pre-optometry students. This program consists of an informational interview, which could be like a phone call/zoom where you will ask questions and have a conversation with an optometrist. This is where you can request to also shadow in person. Here is the link to sign up:
https://optometryadmissions.com/brochures-and-catalogs/scco-alumni-shadowing-program-for-pre-optometry-students/

Shadowing SCCO Optometric Interns at University Eye Center at Ketchum Health in Anaheim connects you with 3rd and 4th year optometry students and faculty. You will be able to experience clinic life, observe patient care, and chat with students/faculty for a few hours. Here is the link to sign up:
https://www.ketchum.edu/optometry/admissions/events

Happy Shadowing!

Volunteering Opportunity: See The Lord - LA

 Hello Members!

Happy finals week! I hope your finals are going well. I have a wonderful volunteering opportunity to help give free eye exams and glasses with See The Lord. They need volunteers for a mission trip in Los Angeles Saturday, June 1st to Sunday, June 2nd.

I attended last year’s event in LA. I am not Christian and you do not need to be to volunteer on the mission trip. It was at Depaul USA resource center for the unhoused. It was so amazing to help with pretesting so the patients could have a free eye exam that they did not have access to before. It was great to help them pick out frames, order free glasses, and give out readers and sunglasses. We saw over 100 people. While volunteering, we were given free food and accommodation. It was also fun and beneficial to meet other pre-optometry students and optometrists!

If you are interested, please apply at https://www.seethelord.org/mission-trips for the LA trip. The deadline to apply is Monday, April 1st. I hope to see you there! This link will also show you information about their Jakarta, Indonesian Mission trip.
